Stolen baskets and shoes

April 29, 2009

At first I thought it was a joke when Paul told me the hanging baskets had been stolen from the driveway. But then I knew he wouldn’t tease me about the plants - he knows I’ve got a little thing going on with them. So I peaked outside and, low and behold, my 2 pyramid hanging baskets were gone. To say I wasn’t happy is an understatement. I didn’t just go and buy pre-made hanging baskets - I selected the plants, bought the soil and planted them myself into the baskets I had chosen. I’d put myself into the plants. I used EFT (I’m going to write more about Emotional Freedom Technique soon) to get rid of my irritation. Afterwards we went for a walk around the local roads just to see, on the extreme off chance, if our thief had been stupid enough to hang my baskets outside his or her own house. No such luck. Then it was time to get on with what we had planned which was pick up Tabitha a pair of shoes. In a few days time she’ll be 18 months and she’s still not walking. It’s not that she can’t walk, it’s just that she doesn’t have the confidence to go solo. The plan is to walk her about when we’re out so she’ll gain confidence. Good plan and, eventually, I’m sure it will work. I also bought new plants and baskets. I sat in the garden this evening and made 2 more hanging baskets.

Squirrel spray and lemons

I love my garden. I love the fact I don’t have to do too much to it apart from gaze at it lovingly and admire the beautiful flowers. I have bumble bees that visit and butterfly which flutter about. AND I have Stanley. Stanley is the squirrel who frequents my garden on a regular basis. I love to watch him (and I do apologise to the Universe here if I’ve got Stan’s gender mixed up but how do you tell???) running along the fences, climbing the big trees at the bottom of the garden and generally being squirrel like. He’s cute and I don’t mind at all his being a rodent. Nope, that doesn’t come between me and my Stan. BUT Stanley has declared war. He is no longer in my good books. I can’t look at him in the same fluffy way anymore. He’s put his nuts above my plants. He’s DUG UP my hanging pots. I shooed him away when I caught the little devil but I can’t stand guard 24/7. Luckily for Stanley, Paul found a recipe for squirrel repellent and I had all the ingredients. I mixed it together and sprayed my poor little potted plants. I won’t know just yet if it keeps Stanley from digging but it was worth a shot. If you want to try my squirrel repellant spray here’s what you need: 2 pints water 1/4 teaspoon detergent (I used ecover washing up liquid - all plant based) 1/4 bottle hot pepper sauce (I had tabasco handy in the cupboard) Put all the ingredients in a spray bottle then go and give your plants a good spraying. Be careful as you spray because, erm, if you don’t have the spray top tight enough it could hit you in the face. Don’t ask. On another matter altogether I found a great way to clean the shower screen. All you need is half a lemon. Just rub it on the screen and watch the soap scum disappear (not exactly disappear really - more like slide down the screen).

The Greek goddess Hecate is associated with the dark and new moon. This queen of the night is a complex character as you’ll see. Hecate is a Titan who turned against her own kind in order to bring Zeus into power as the chief god.  Because of her allegiance to him, Zeus allowed her to retain [...]

Reiki back and Anglo Saxons in Kent

We’ve been on holiday BUT we’re back now. The boys were on Easter holiday from school BUT they’re back now. Everything should be flowing easy AND yet I can’t seem to get a handle on getting back to normal (whatever constitutes normal these days). This week has zoomed by so far with everyday stuff, work and a few extra things like getting the tyres on Tabitha’s buggy repaired (again) and a quote for paintwork on the car after someone scratched it. To top it all off I’ve had a headache on and off since Sunday and my back has been aching after working in the garden at the weekend. I never had any trouble with backaches before I became pregnant with Daniel, my eldest. After having kids, and especially 10lb Tabitha, it doesn’t seem to take much to trigger a backache. Paul has been giving me Reiki on my back for the past 2 days. It’s a little creaky but so much better. It doesn’t look like the rest of the week is going to slow down. We’ve got to do grocery shopping and pick up some books for Jake at the library. He’s got a homework assignment on Anglo Saxons which he completed today without any reference material. He guessed the answers like the Anglo Saxons landed in Kent and their religion was ‘that one’. I’m hoping after the New Moon I’ll feel a little less frazzled and back on an even keel. I’m also hoping the library has the answers for Jake!

Why A Spider Has Eyes

Today’s myth comes from the Winnebago Tribe that makes their home in the state of Nebraska. After the Earthmaker finished creating the world, he decided there should be a special creature to watch over his creation and tell him about everything going on.  His first appointment for this honour was Turtle, but his legs were so [...]

Spider Vision

Though you don’t have the luxury of having eight eyes, you can do amazing things with the pair you have.  Remember Spider only had two when she started her post as watcher.  Prior to the Earthmakers gift she relied upon training her eyes to see the invisible; this kept her out of harms way countless [...]

Day of the Triffids

Ever since I was in Cornwall I’ve had a bee in my bonnet about plants. Anyone who knew me 5 years ago would have laughed and insisted it was a practical joke. You see, I’ve never really been into gardening or plants (had a knack of killing both plants and goldfish - not intentionally and not together). My parents would spend hours in the garden and I never understood. To me gardening was boring and it was what old people did. In our last house I wanted to have plants. We had a tiny little patio garden and I bought pots and filled them with bedding plants. I bought a rubber plant (which I still have and it’s huge now) but that was my one and only house plant. My excuse was the impossibly thin window sills in our Victorian terrace. I vowed I’d have more plants when we moved to our new home back in December 07. Until today all I had was my rubber plant. Apart from 2 dragon trees (Paul picked those) I’m really not sure what I bought. I had to read all the labels and work out where the plants would be happiest. We’ve got plants in the conservatory, lounge, bathroom and hallway. We didnt’ stop there. The lady who lived in our house before us was a fantastic gardener. We have a mature garden which blossoms and blooms without any kind of intervention from us. She had all sorts of hooks for hanging baskets. Here’s my garden helper, Jake, putting our plants into pots and baskets. I found the plastic cauldron I used to hand out sweets last Halloween, punctured a couple of holes in the bottom and turned it into a plant pot. It’s now outside the front door along with 2 hanging baskets. Looks appropriately witchy now! AND I didn’t forget the birds. They now have a little bird house hanging from the tree at the bottom of the garden and a feeder full of peanuts!
