I’ve just finished reading ‘Gargoyle’ by Andrew Davidson. I saw it in the book shop and was drawn immediately to the cover, and the word, of course, gargoyle. I’ve developed quite an interest in the little stone monsters which hang out on castles, churches and cathedrals probably to scare folk like me away
It doesn’t work. Although I think Paul often wished it would because where there’s a gargoyle there’s me and my camera.
Here’s a little chap from Tichfield Abbey which I took back in February.
Back to the book. I left the book at the store mainly because it was a love story. And I don’t do love stories. I went through a stage as a teenager of reading any love story I could get my hands on because, as a teen, I had no idea about the real thing. And, according to the romance novels, the real thing is an incredibly successful, devilishly handsome, insanely rich, somewhat confused 30 somethings man who knows, without any fumbling, where to hit all the right places.
And we all know real life just isn’t that good (sorry Paul if you’re reading this).
So I stopped reading love stories.
But I did get the Gargoyle out of the library and read it. I read it non stop, couldn’t put it down. It had all the ingredients which made it a fantastic tale of two souls destined to meet over time and space. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t ‘do love stories’ because it’s a brilliant book (and even more so when you consider it’s by a first time novelist too).
This leads me, in a very circular way, to sharing with you the destination of a set of rune stones I made. When I say made, I mean hand engraving, painting and varnishing. It’s no where on the skill level needed to be a gargoyle sculptor but I do put my heart and soul into what I do. I ship off the runes and very often have no idea what happens to them once they leave my hands.
I made a set for a lady a little while ago and she’s kept in touch with me. She’s hand made a rune bag to keep the stones in and I wanted to share it with you because it’s just FAB!
She doesn’t make the bags to sell but I’m hoping she’ll change her mind soon. If she does I’ll let you know because her work it beautiful and heart-felt.
Love!
