The Greek goddess Hecate is associated with the dark and new moon. This queen of the night is a complex character as you’ll see.
Hecate is a Titan who turned against her own kind in order to bring Zeus into power as the chief god. Because of her allegiance to him, Zeus allowed her to retain all of her powers. This was quite a generous gift when you consider she had influence on Earth, in the air, and at sea!
Later on Zeus granted her the privilege of becoming a goddess of the underworld in order to protect Persephone when she dwelt with Hades for six months out of the year.
Because of her great power Hecate has a vast diversity of roles. She looks over fertility and birth, gives people wisdom and riches, looks over flocks, and grants safe navigation to those in her favour. In addition to this she is also the goddess of crossroads and witches.
Because of her underworld connections and some of her best students electing to use her wisdom for dark arts, Hecate’s reputation took a huge beating. However, as any witch or wizard can tell you, every person who receives great knowledge must choose how to use it. It isn’t the fault of the teacher if the student misuses what was learned.
