For centuries there have been tales of demons taking human form to prey upon men and women as they sleep. The incubi and succubi are probably the most well known of these demons. With the incubus taking male form and the succubus female form, they drain energy from innocent sleepers by having sex with them.
One of the earliest mentions of these demons comes from ancient Mesopotamia. Gilgamesh, a king ruling around 2500 bc, was claimed to be born of a human mother and a Lila father which gave him super human strength. Lila are wandering demons who seduce and impregnate women which then results in them giving birth to human/demon hybrid. The female counterparts of these demons, Lilitu, appear to men in erotic dreams to steal their life energy.
Tales of similar demons are to be found all over the world and are usually based on old folklore. One case of a modern incubus outbreak has been reported in Zanzibar since the 1970s. The Popobawa is a Swahili name meaning Bat-Wing and it’s said to have originated from the description of a dark shadow cast by the spirit when it attacks at night.
The Popobawa announces his presence by the sound of scraping claws on the roof top and a sharp, pungent smell. He is different from other incubi in that it only attacks men and only in their own beds. Many men have taken to sleeping in the streets or on porches after reported attacks.
This demonic entity seems to have made an appearance as recently as 2007. No one knows for sure why it stalks Zanzibar but there are rumours of an angry sheikh summoning the demon. He lost control and now the Popobawa runs loose, free to terrorise men.
